At RED HOUSE we are passionate about changing the way in which anorexia and other eating disorders are perceived and treated. This involves acknowledgement and treatment of all aspects, including body, mind and soul. red house believes that individualised micro-nutritional rehabilitation is the most critical treatment key to sustained recovery. Unlike typical “one-size-fits-all” hospital-based programs which offer patients little choice about the type of nutrition used for re-feeding, RED HOUSE takes an evidence-based, scientific and individualised approach to nutritional rehabilitation. New research is revealing that anorexia and other eating disorders are largely triggered and perpetuated by epigenetic changes in the body and brain resulting from malnutrition, including common deficiencies in certain vitamins, minerals and other micronutrients. While not ignoring complex psychological complications present for many people with eating disorders, RED HOUSE is harnessing this evidence in the provision of a new treatment option. It is hypothesized that correcting these individual biochemical imbalances through the use of specific nutrients, returns both the body and mind to a state of equilibrium, fostering sustainable recovery and preventing relapse. This approach is backed up by extensive, compelling research and practice by Dr. James Greenblatt, an integrative Psychiatrist from the United States. We couple Dr Greenblatt's approach to nutritional rehabilitation with approaches supporting emotional wellbeing. Amongst other resources, RED HOUSE has drawn from Greenblatt's ground-breaking research to inform and plan many of our services, particularly individualised micronutrient therapy. We strongly encourage the reading of Greenblatt's books, which include:
'Answers to Anorexia',
'Answers to Binge Eating' and
'Breakthrough Depression Solution: Mastering Your Mood with Nutrition, Diet & Supplementation'.
(Please note that we have no financial or other hidden interests in promoting Dr. Greenblatt's work. We promote it solely for its scientific credibility and compelling argument for changing the way in which these disorders are perceived and treated).
Micronutrient Therapy requires analysis of an individual’s blood chemistry and medical guidance to correct imbalances and monitor changes. Thus our Individualised Micronutrient Therapy service requires you to make an appointment with our specialist consultants Dr Leanne Barron and Nutrition Clinician, Casey Dick. The personalised information and advice you receive in your consultations with Leanne and Casey will then be used to develop your individualised program. You will also receive regular ongoing support and monitoring of your progress.
What you will learn from the consultations and program:
· Why your “dis-ordered” relationship with food is not your fault and why it is not simply a matter of having the “willpower” to change it;
· How specific micro-nutritional deficiencies/imbalances and genetics cause and perpetuate Anorexia and/or binge eating;
· Specific foods you need to add/increase and avoid according to your individual genetic makeup, microbiome, and biochemistry;
· How/why specific foods can alleviate depression, anxiety, and OCD tendencies
· Which medications (if any) are most suitable for you according to your individual biochemistry and neuro-biofeedback results;
· Why/how specific medications can help in the initial stages of recovery, but can be eliminated once your biochemistry has been corrected;
· How refined gluten, over-processed cheese, sugar and artificial sweeteners affect your brain chemistry and why they play a major role in the development and perpetuation of eating disorders in some individuals
· The roles of specific amino acids, peptides, vitamins and minerals in recovery from eating disorders
Once you learn and understand these things your relationship with food will transform!! It will become something that you are inspired by and something that enriches your health and your life; as opposed to something that negatively controls your mind, body, soul and life.
